Join the Radio 3 Breakfast Singalong this Friday Morning: the 19th Century Shaker Song 'Simple Gifts'

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week with a focus on kindness. Being kind not only helps someone else, but it's proven to have a positive impact on the bestower of kindness. COVID-19 has encouraged everyone to look out for their community.

This week's Radio 3 Breakfast Singalong on Friday is the 19th Century Shaker song Simple Gifts. You might recognise it as the hymn Lord of the Dance.

Activity: You can sing along to the piano accompaniment, or you can play along. If you are going to do this, make sure you practise the tune in E flat major.

You can find the lyrics here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/42CzgBYLd6DTWzVfLt9qTxG/the-radio-3-breakfast-singalong

The event will be on BBC Radio 3 at 8:55am (BST) on Friday morning. You can share your videos and photos by tweeting @BBCradio3 and with the hashtag #BreakfastSingalong

On Friday 22 May, we invite you to gather around the virtual piano to sing the 19th-century Shaker song Simple Gifts – although you may know the tune from the hymn Lord of the Dance. Tune in to Radio 3 on BBC Sounds any time up until 8.55am, when we’ll play a beautiful piano accompaniment recorded especially for us by Anna Tilbrook. For those of you planning to play along, it'll be in E flat major. We’re playing pieces that use this tune in Breakfast all week to help you learn the music.
